February 2003

Philip Smith and Tim Phillips are the recipients of the prestigious TASA Prize for the Best Paper in the Journal of Sociology, for their paper: ‘Popular understandings of "unAustralian": an investigation of the un-national’, Journal of Sociology, 37, 4, December, 2001, 323-339. The Prize is awarded to the paper judged by the panel to be the best published in the previous two years of the Journal of Sociology.

  • Rob White has been promoted to Professor.

University of South Australia

  • Suzanne Franzway has been promoted to Associate Professor.

  • Gayle Jennings has been promoted to Associate Professor.

  • Dr Larry Saha has retired, although he is back on contract, lecturing in social psychology.
  • Dr Owen Dent has resigned to take up a research position at Concorde Hospital in Sydney.
  • Dr Jack Barbalet has resigned to take up the Chair in sociology at Leicester.

University of Queensland

  • Professor Geoff Lawrence has taken up the positions of Professor of Sociology and Head of the School of Social Science.
  • Dr Lynda Herbert-Cheshire has accepted a three year postdoctoral fellowship, continuing her research on community development in rural and regional Australia.
  • Dr Phil Smith has taken up a position in the Department of Sociology at Yale University.

Flinders University

  • Professor Robert Holton is on leave and has taken up the Professorship of Sociology at Trinity College, Dublin
  • Dr Xiaowei Zang and Dr Laura Brewer have resigned to take up overseas appointments
  • Dr Jason Pudsey has been appointed as a Lecturer B
  • Visitors to the Department have included: Professor Garth Massey (University of Wymoing);
  • Dr Bernard Strattman (Germany); Dr Hiroyuki Shimizu (Japan).
  • Sharyn Roach Anleu has been promoted to Professor in the Department of Sociology.

National Centre for Epidemiology & Population Health

  • Professor Tony McMichael has taken the position of Director of the Centre, He replaces the founding Director, Bob Douglas, who has recently retired.
  • Visitors have included Professor Hilary Graham, Lancaster University; Professor
  • Steve Kuntz from the University of Rochester; and Professor Philip James, Chairman of the International Obesity Task Force of the World Health Organization.

RMIT

  • Dr Kim Humphrey has arrived from the Northern Territory to take up a Senior Lectureship.
  • Professor Belinda Probert is currently acting Dean and Associate Professor Bruce Wilson is Head of School.
  • Associate Professor Chris Chamberlain has moved from Monash to the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute located within RMIT.
  • Associate Professor John Martin has been appointed Associate Professor of the Centre for Regional and Rural Development in Hamilton, Western Victoria.

University of Sydney

  • Professor Bettina Cass is returning from having been Dean for five years and taking a year's study leave at Georgetown University in the US.
  • Associate Professor Joanne Finkelstein is going on study leave in 2nd Semester. She was promoted to Associate Professor at the end of last year.
  • Dr Sue Goodwin has been appointed as a Lecturer B.
  • Dr Craig Browne has been appointed to a one-year contract.

University of Tasmania

  • Kristin Natalier has been appointed to a Lecturer A.
  • Dr Keith Jacobs has been appointed as a Housing Research Fellow.
  • Dr Brett Hutchins has been appointed as a Lecturer A.
  • From 2003 Associate Professor Gary Easthope will transfer to a 0.5 position, working in the first half of each year.
  • Visitors have included Professor Marienne Lien from the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo.

University of Melbourne

  • Johanna Wyn has been promoted to Professor in Education, and the Chair has been awarded in recognition of her work in youth studies.

QUT

  • Professor Sandra Harding (Dean, Faculty of Business) has recently been appointed as the Chairperson of the Australian Statistics Advisory Council; as well as being: Member, HIH Assessment Review Panel; President, Australian Business Deans Council; Member, Queensland Small Business Advisory Council; and Non-Executive Director, Brisbane Transport Board.

University of Newcastle

  • Dr John Germov has been elected to the Executive Committee of the International Sociological Association (ISA)
