PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN SOCIOLOGY

Applications are invited for a full-time, permanent position at the Professor/Associate Professor level in the Department of Sociology, commencing in February 2009.

The Department is seeking to appoint a person of outstanding scholarly achievement, with a distinguished record of research, teaching, graduate supervision and with demonstrated academic leadership.

Senior academics with an expertise in Sociology and a research profile in criminology and related areas are invited to apply. It is expected that the successful applicant will be Head of Department of Sociology in due course and lead the new Criminology programme being hosted by the Department.

The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas; social theory and theories of crime and punishment, in particular global developments, impacts of the criminal justice system on indigenous peoples and other vulnerable groups, international criminal justice and comparative analysis, incarceration, youth crime, state crime and recent debates and issues in criminology.

The Department of Sociology is a highly ranked Department that has been experiencing significant student growth for a number of years. The Department takes pride in its vibrant research culture as well as its student-centred approach to teaching. It has a strong postgraduate teaching programme and currently has over 20 students enrolled in its PhD programme. Teaching and research areas of staff are broad, including theory, methods, family, health, gender, policy, violence, popular culture, crime, death, emotions, technology, media and human rights.

The National Drug Research Institute (NDRI), in collaboration with Monash University and the Australian National University, has been funded by the NHMRC to undertake a multidisciplinary study, ‘Understanding the barriers to improved access, engagement and retention of methamphetamine users in health services’. The project will combine qualitative and epidemiological approaches and employ an innovative conceptual framework for the integration and application of research findings

Description:

The Research Associate or Research Fellow (depending on qualifications) will coordinate and conduct the qualitative component of the project in consultation with the Project Leader. The successful applicant will need tertiary qualifications, excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience in qualitative research. He or she will be able to work as part of a team, but function effectively with minimal supervision.

Position:

TWO PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University of Technology
The National Drug Research Institute (NDRI), in collaboration with Monash University and the Australian National University, has been funded by the NHMRC to undertake a multidisciplinary study, ‘Understanding the barriers to improved access, engagement and retention of methamphetamine users in health services’. The project will combine qualitative and epidemiological approaches and employ an innovative conceptual framework for the integration and application of research findings.

Description:

One scholarship, based at NDRI’s Melbourne office, will support the qualitative arm of the project. The successful applicant will have a good honours degree, or equivalent, in anthropology, sociology or a related discipline, and the capacity to undertake qualitative research with methamphetamine users and drug service providers.

The other scholarship, based at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, will support the epidemiological arm of the project. The successful applicant will have a good honours degree, or equivalent, in epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology, psychology or a related discipline, and the capacity to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

Both scholarships will carry an annual stipend of $25,817pa for three years.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

Salary Level A$52K to A$70K per year (plus 17% employer superannuation and leave loading).

Description:

Applicants are invited to apply for the position of Research Associate at the Social Policy Research Centre (SPRC). The successful applicant will be working on a three year funded Australian Research Council linkage project on work, family, gender and social policy in Australia from 1992-2006. This position will require frequent contact with linkage partners, as well as the local, national and international social policy community.

The SPRC is a multidisciplinary Centre located within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at University of NSW. It undertakes a broad-based dynamic program of research on contemporary national and international social policy issues.

This is a full-time fixed term position 35 hours per week (although part-time applicants may be considered) available until 30 June 2011, with the prospect of renewal.

Position:

PHD SCHOLARSHIP
A PhD scholarship is currently advertised at the Centre for Health Communication at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Description:

The researcher will be appointed to work on a three-year ARC Discovery project. The project involves video-ethnographic work in tertiary hospital settings. The study focuses on how clinicians communicate about their work, where they communicate, and how their communications bear on clinical risk.

The Centre for Health Communication conducts social scientific research and evaluation projects on different facets of the Australian health sector, including clinical practice improvement programs, the organisation of clinical work, the enactment of cross-clinical relationships, and the realisation of health policy reform initiatives in everyday practices. The Centre employs a multi-disciplinary group of researchers.

The PhD
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD scholarship that will fund research into communication among clinicians in hospitals. The PhD pursues a mix of methodologies, including video-based ethnography, interviews, observations, and the like. The main duties are collecting clinical practice data across a number of hospitals about how clinicians interact with one another; doing literature reviews of ethnographic and other research methods to improve understanding of situated practice and its analysis; producing a thesis proposal, thesis-related reports and a thesis; participating at project meetings, and (if there is time!) writing scholarly articles.

  • Essential Criteria: Honours degree or Masters by Research degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Desirable Criteria: Knowledge of the health care sector. Applicants ideally have previous clinical experience and qualitative research experience.

The PhD stipend rate is $24,866 p.a.

Macquarie University Research Fellowships Scheme (Australia)

Description:

Macquarie University will offer up to six new postdoctoral research positions
commencing in 2009 through the Macquarie University Research Fellowships Scheme.
Positions will be awarded on a competitive basis and will be full time for three years.

The Macquarie University Research Fellowships Scheme has three main objectives:

  1. To provide support at a postdoctoral level to researchers near the beginning of their
    research career who have an outstanding track record (relevant to opportunity) or who show
    evidence of excellent research potential.
  2. To provide an incubation research period for early career researchers, allowing them to increase
    their competitive edge in securing research funding from non-University sources.
  3. To enhance the research capabilities of existing and emerging areas of research concentration and

Centre for Research on Social Inclusion is keen to attract suitable applicants to apply for one of
these fellowships through the Centre. The Centre for Research on Social Inclusion is an interdisciplinary
group of researchers from disciplines such as Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, and
Human Geography. We undertake social, cultural and philosophical research into contemporary social justice
