Queensland's Biggest Conference to Boost Brisbane
Economy by $4 Million
Released: 28 May 2002
Queensland's largest conference this year will be held at the Brisbane Convention Centre in July, boosting the local economy by approximately $4 million.
The XV World Congress of Sociology will see more than 3,500 delegates from 50 countries converge on Brisbane to discuss a wide range of social and economic issues affecting the future of society.
President of the Australian Sociological Association, Dr John Germov, is proud that Brisbane had been selected to host the most significant event in the international sociological calendar.
"This is the perfect opportunity for Queensland to showcase a number of local academics and research papers, and will allow our colleagues from around the world to become a little more familiar with our society and culture," Dr Germov said.
"While delegates will enjoy Brisbane's hospitality throughout the formal program of the Congress, many will experience tropical North Queensland and the Queensland Outback through pre and post Congress tours," he said.
President of the International Sociological Association, Professor Alberto Martinelli, said Brisbane had been chosen to host the World Congress for several reasons including the temperate climate, but most significantly to recognise its commitment to the international quest for universality and the importance of the Australian sociological community.
"We have a number of Queensland academics and sociologists presenting topical and informative papers at this year's Congress, many of which have a significant standing on the global social agenda," Professor Martinelli said.
"We will address an array of sociological issues at the Congress, including the challenges stemming from global interconnectedness, new technologies and the increasing hybridisation of cultures," he said.
The XV World Congress of Sociology will be held from 7 - 13 July 2002.
