A PhD student at Swinburne University in Victoria has found Australia’s
ethnic women are being empowered through multiculturalism.
In a paper titled “That’s My Australian Side”, Zuleyka Zevallos
discusses the experiences of second-generation Latino Australian women.
But in further study she has found that most women in Australia’s ethnic
minorities gained an added sense of power and freedom from their dual identity.
She said most of the women in her studies believed living in Australia gave
them the right to challenge the traditional thinking of their parents, particularly
when it came to their sexuality.
And in contrast to what many might think, the women believed benefits of their
dual identity outstripped incidents of racial discrimination.
Ms Zevallos said although the women did not consider themselves to be ‘Australians’,
they would often say, “That’s my Australian side” when discussing
their identity, citizenship and sexuality.
