2008 TASA Public Lecture
TASA Annual Public Lecture 2008 is being presented by Professor Michael Humphrey on the topic of Humanitarianism: the power of the gift
Hosted by the University of Sydney
Date: Tuesday 30 September 2008
Time: 5.30 – 7.00 pm
Venue: Room to be confirmed. The University of Sydney.
Abstract of Lecture:
In reaction to the Burmese government’s resistance to allow humanitarian aid and agencies to provide relief to the mass victims of cyclone Nargis PM Kevin Rudd declared we should ‘bash the doors down diplomatically’ to persuade the Burmese regime to let us fulfill our humanitarian obligations towards innocent Burmese victims. The PM expressed a widespread revulsion at the Burmese government's rejection of humanitarian help, the rejection of a life preserving gift. This lecture explores the limits of the contemporary global politics of victims and therapeutic intervention. The lecture looks at the relationship between events of suffering, victims and political legitimacy.

2009 TASA Public Lectures
Call for Expressions of Interest:
TASA Public Lectures are designed as significant public events that aim to foster a positive public perception of sociology as a profession and to create links between sociologists and the broader community. They aim to showcase sociological scholarship, provide a forum for communication between TASA members, and they are also an important opportunity to promote sociology in your community.
Three universities have so far hosted highly successful public lectures: The University of Melbourne in 2005, The Flinders University of South Australia in 2006, and Griffith University in 2007. A public lecture will be held in Sydney in 2008. For more information on these lectures, see the links at the bottom of this page.
TASA Executive aims to support the organisation of up to two TASA Public lectures a year, one of which will generally be held in the AVCC Common Week in September. The convenor(s) of the TASA Public Lecture during the September AVCC common week will be asked to combine the Public Lecture with the TASA AGM. It is expected that the convenor(s) of the TASA Public Lecture will be a current member(s) of TASA.
TASA Executive is calling for expressions of interest for the hosting of Public Lectures for 2009. The expressions of interest must contain the following:
- The name of the convenor(s)
- The name of the host institution(s)
- The title of the lecture and the name of the presenter
- A brief bio of the presenter and the justification for the selection of the presenter
- A brief media plan
- Draft budget and identification of supplementary sources of funding (including top-up funding)
TASA Executive will make a final decision on the selection of the public lecture event(s). On the provision of a budget from the convenor and signed MOU, TASA will provide support for public lectures in the amount of up to $1000 ($1500 if TASA AGM is also held).
Expressions of interest are due in the TASA office (admin@tasa.org.au) on or before Friday 3 April 2009.
The TASA Office will assist in promoting the event.
