TASA Introductory Media Release
Released: 8 May 2003

To the Editor

The Australian Sociological Association (TASA) is celebrating 40 years as one
of Australia’s leading social science professional groups.

As successful hosts of the World Congress of Conference in 2002, which attracted
3000 delegates from across the globe, TASA now plans to capture a renewed interest
in the field and build a stronger relationship with the media.

Sociology has been largely untapped by the media, in terms of expert commentary
on social issues and accessing up-to-date social analysis and critical research
on a broad range of topics including:

Among the latest published research are studies into boat people, refugees,
women and ethnicity and the struggle of balancing family and work commitments
in contemporary Australia.

Some of the most influential social analysis in the past 40 years will also
be collated during 2003 as part of the TASA celebrations and presented during
its annual conference in December.

TASA can provide access to expert knowledge and to sociologists willing to
comment on a range of news and current affairs topics.

News journalists and feature writers can access in-depth academic research
from Australia’s leading sociologists and should feel free to contact
us.
