Promoting sociology in Australia
Facilitating sociology teaching and research
Enhancing the professional development of TASA members
The conference will be held on the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland. Located seven kilometres from the city’s heart on a magnificent 114-hectare site in a bend of the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and many playing fields.
Its hub is a semi-circle of cloistered buildings enclosing the Great Court, which is on the Queensland Heritage Register as well as the Register of the National Trust of Queensland. The TASA conference will be contained as much as possible within the space of the Great Court although meal breaks and keynote sessions will be held in nearby buildings.
A note about weather
The Brisbane weather can be somewhat unpredictable. November is generally very pleasant but temperatures can range from a comfortable 27 degrees to a hot 34 degrees and the humidity can vary enormously. On occasions, we can also experience heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Our advice is to dress in a relaxed, causal style for Summer comfort and to pack an umbrella. It is well worth bringing a cardigan or light jacket in case you find the air-conditioning a little cool. For the conference dinner, you can go as formal or as casual as you like. Just be prepared to party!
Brisbane is easily accessible by air and has a domestic and international terminal. Qantas, Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia travel directly between Brisbane and New Zealand on a daily basis. The airport also connects directly with all major Australian capitals via Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin as well as some regional centres in Queensland and New South Wales via QantasLink and Brindabella Airlines.
The airport is conveniently located 15-20 minutes from the city and approximately 40 minutes from the University. Taxis cost around $40 to the city and $60 to the University.
The quickest and most economical way to get to the city from Brisbane Airport is with Airtrain, which stops at Central Station, Roma Street and South Brisbane. The Airtrain stations at the Domestic and International Airports are located directly outside the terminals. Trains depart every 15 minutes to the city during peak times and run from 6am to midnight daily. Tickets can be purchased on the day or in advance and cost $15.50 one way and $29 return. Further information can be obtained via the Airtrain web page.
For those travelling on to Toowong or St Lucia, you can catch a train directly from Central Station or Roma Street to Toowong. A bus or taxi will then take you to the St Lucia campus.

Free coach transfers
Coaches will be provided each morning and afternoon during the conference to transport delegates to and from the university, the city, Southbank and Toowong. Details of pick-up points and times will be provided in due course.
City bus
If you wish to travel outside of the coach pick-up times, city buses travel regularly to the University from all key accommodation hubs. There are two bus stations located at the University of Queensland – Chancellors’ Place bus station and UQ lakes bus station.
From Brisbane’s Central Business District, there are three Brisbane City Council bus routes which run directly to the University of Queensland.
From Toowong, you can catch the 402 (Toowong to Chancellor’s Place).
City bus timetables can be obtained from the Translink website.
Ferry
The CityCat ferry is the most enjoyable and often the most convenient means of getting to the University. The campus CityCat terminal at UQ is located near the corner of Sir William MacGregor Drive and Blair Drive. Please allow a 5-10 minute walk from the ferry terminal to the Great Court.
The CityCat can be caught from city terminals at North Quay, Gardens Point and Riverside and from Southbank 1 and 2. It also stops opposite the Regatta at Toowong.
Maps of the CityCat route and terminals, along with timetables can be obtained from the Translink website.
Taxi
Taxis from the city to the University cost around $25. Taxi ranks are located on campus at University Drive and Chancellors’ Place. Both are convenient for conference delegates. For taxis during peak hours it is worth making a booking. The two main taxi providers are:
Car
The main entrance to the University is along Sir Fred Schonell Drive, located on Map 179 F2 of the UBD Brisbane “Refidex” Street Directory. From Brisbane’s Central Business District, Sir Fred Schonell Drive is most easily accessed via Coronation Drive.
Two multi-level carparks (Buildings 98A and 98B) are located on Sir Fred Schonell Drive and are available for casual parking at a fee of $5 per day (pay and display). Please note that casual parking is restricted to levels coloured green with a diamond symbol and that the first three levels of the car parks (coloured red) are for permit holders only.
