Promoting sociology in Australia
Facilitating sociology teaching and research
Enhancing the professional development of TASA members

TASA Public Lectures

TASA Public Lectures are designed as significant public events that aim to foster a positive public perception of sociology as a profession and to create links between sociologists and the broader community. They aim to showcase sociological scholarship, provide a forum for communication between TASA members, and they are also an important opportunity to promote sociology in your community.

Six universities have so far hosted highly successful public lectures: The University of Melbourne in 2005, Flinders University of South Australia in 2006, Griffith University in 2007 and The University of Sydney in 2008. Due to unprecedented interest in hosting the 2009 TASA Public Lecture, we decided to fund two Lectures. The first was hosted by Flinders University in August, featuring Professor Riaz Hassan on: Suicide Bombings: Homicidal Killing or a Weapon of War? The second lecture was hosted by the QUT School of Justice, Faculty of Law, and the TASA Crime and Governance Thematic Group. It featured Professor Kerry Carrington on: ‘Offending Youth: Youth, Sex and Crime’ (see below).

TASA Executive aims to support the organisation of up to two TASA Public lectures a year, one of which will generally be held in the AVCC Common Week in September. The convenor(s) of the TASA Public Lecture during the September AVCC common week will be asked to combine the Public Lecture with the TASA AGM. It is expected that the convenor(s) of the TASA Public Lecture will be a current member(s) of TASA.
