During 2024, TASA’s Executive engaged in thoughtful discussions around how to better support our members across the full arc of their sociological careers. At the November Executive meeting, a proposal to introduce Career Stage Groups (CSGs) was tabled, discussed, and ratified.

Many of you will already be familiar with the tailored supports TASA provides for students, including Postgraduate Day, conference bursaries, Postgraduate TASA Thursdays, and dedicated postgraduate representation through our portfolio leader and sub-committee. The CSG initiative builds on that success by extending tailored support to every stage of a sociologist’s career.

We’re excited to officially launch the following five inaugural Career Stage Groups: 

These above groups are designed to foster community, peer support, and opportunities that are meaningful to members navigating each specific phase of their professional journey. As with our Thematic Groups, each CSG will be led by one or more conveners, who will have access to a TASAweb Control Panel to communicate with their group members and support relevant initiatives.

By focussing on the entire career trajectory, we hope to ensure that no TASA member walks the career path alone, whether you're just beginning your studies, transitioning into leadership, or reflecting on decades of contribution.

We are now seeking expressions of interest from members who would like to convene a Career Stage Group. This is a wonderful opportunity to help shape the direction of your group and play a key role in supporting your peers. And let’s be honest, there’ll never be another chance to be the inaugural convener of a CSG, so if that sounds like a legacy you’d like to be part of, we’d love to hear from you!
