Postgraduate Update and 'So you're finishing your PhD in a pandemic... what's next?' by Inger Mewbur

'So you're finishing your PhD in a pandemic... what's next?' by Inger Mewburn

Inger Mewburn
Inger is a research educator who has been working with PhD students for over a decade. They started their academic career as an architecture lecturer in 2001, following a decade in architecture practice with leading design firms. Inger took up the position of Director of Research Training at the Australian National University in 2013, after working as a research fellow in the School of Graduate Research at RMIT University since 2006. You can read more about Inger's work here.

Inger has generously agreed to present for our TASA Thematic Week postgraduate session. The presentation is titled 'So you're finishing your PhD in a pandemic... what's next?'.

This session is free but registration is essential via the 'Register Now' button on the right hand side of this page. Note,
if you have/intend to register for TASA Thematic Week you will get automatic access to this event (i.e. no need to register again here).

About this session: Covid-19 presents a massive disruption to the academic workforce. PhD students and early career researchers are worried about their future career prospects inside academia and confused about their options outside the university walls. In this one-hour lecture, Inger Mewburn uses her team’s research on the post-PhD job market to:

  • Enhance your understanding of the changed academic job market, analysing the effects of hiring freezes and travel restrictions.
  • Increase awareness of career opportunities in industry; which sectors are looking for research talent?
  • Help you approach the non-academic job market with more confidence.

Inger will speak for 45 minutes, with 15 minutes for Q&A.

Postgraduate Update:

Preceding Inger's presentation, the Postgraduate Portfolio Leader, Anthony, will give a short update - 12:40pm - 1:00pm AEDT - on the activities of the TASA Postgraduate Sub-Committee for 2021, followed by tips for how to engage with TASA Thematic Week. Given COVID-19 restrictions, there have been less opportunities for sociology postgrads to connect. Join us on Twitter and tag @tasapostgrads to virtually connect and start a conversation!
