Join us on Thursday 13th July 2023 for this month's TASA Thursday Webinar titled: The sticky stuff - the question of ethics in digital research.

This month guest presenters Emily van der Nagel, Ben Lyal and Robbie Fordyce from Monash university, School of Media, Film and Journalism will explore the question of ethics in digital research.

This discussion will shed light on different debates and considerations surrounding the ethics of doing digital social research.

Internet scholars like Markham maintain that to study the internet is to better understand society. Scholars have been innovating and adapting different approaches to digital fieldwork in response to the ongoing creation and evolution of internet platforms, technologies and practices.

As digital methods gain popularity in inter-disciplinary academic research, this discussion aims to illuminate the sticky stuff – how to ethically conduct research within the partially private (Robards, 2013) spaces of social media.

In particular, we would like to centre the discussion around the following (these are just some ideas, we welcome any suggestions around themes you would like to talk about):

- What are some of the ethical minefields you come across as an internet researcher?

- What ethical considerations need to be taken for digital research that are different from doing research in a non-digital ecosystem? For example, digital ethnography unravels and complicates some of the ethics considered for traditional ethnography.

- How to build a researcher ethos as an internet researcher/ feminist ethics of care?
