April 2021

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to send this out to double-check you all received the updated session times for the April meeting and also our first seminar - details below.

Next monthly meeting

Thurs 29 April, 1pm Qld time. Zoom meeting link: https://charlesdarwinuni.zoom.us/j/83510269238
As always, we invite you to our informal monthly catch up where we discuss upcoming events and opportunities, research related quandries, and other successes and challenges in our daily lives as applied sociologists (inc. aspiring sociologists!)

Applied sociology seminar
Tues 4 May, 3pm Qld time. Zoom meeting link: https://charlesdarwinuni.zoom.us/j/81381909518
Dr Sophie Hickey will present an overview of her work as an applied sociologist working in partnership to re-design and evaluate maternity care for First Nations families.
These seminars are an opportunity to hear more about each others work and delve into applied examples of methodological designs, research for impact, collaborative research approaches, and ask questions of all things applied sociology.

Towards a working definition of Applied sociology, submitted by Alan Scott
Alan did an online search for definitions of applied sociology and this is what he found:
  • The Web's  Definition of Applied Sociology (noun) is 'Any use of sociological methods and theories to provide solutions to problems or make decisions. Example of Applied Sociology Using sociological knowledge to increase revenue by adapting advertising to a particular population." Publish Year: 2013
  • Applied sociology definition | Open Education Sociology ... There are no results for Definition of Applied Sociology (noun) Any use of sociological methods and theories to provide solutions to problems or make decisions. Example of Applied Sociology Using sociological knowledge to increase revenue by adapting advertising to a particular population. Publish Year: 2013
Alan suggests perhaps drawing together the ISA crowd next year to come up with an international definition, acknowledging that many others do this work out there but perhaps under different names.

Hope you are well and as always, don't hesitate to drop me a line sophie.hickey@cdu.edu.au

Cheers
Sophie
