| Our warm congratulations are extended to fellow member Ashleigh Haw. Ashleigh has secured a new position at Deakin University as a Research Fellow in Sociology, in the Faculty of Arts and Education.
| | TASA Tea Time - new to TASA's event calendar | For many of us, the last two years have been defined by periods of isolation and disconnection in our personal and professional lives. TASA Tea Time is an opportunity for all TASA members to (re-)connect with other sociologists. Join with a beverage and snack of your choice, and chat to others with a shared interest in sociology.
Hosted by Heidi Hetz, our Equity and Inclusion Portfolio Leader, TASA Tea Time will be held once a month, on a different day each time, alternating between morning tea and afternoon tea. The first one for 2022 is scheduled for next Friday February 4 at 11am - 12pm (AEDT Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra), 8am (AWST Perth), 10am (AEST, Brisbane, Cairns).
| As mentioned last week, we are calling for members to contribute to a TASA Thursdays session on the trials and tribulations around the ethics of social media research. We would like to run this session on February 17th (12:30pm - 1:30pm AEDT). If you have had experience in this area, and would like to be a part of a webinar on this topic, please contact Sally in TASA Admin.
We are also extending a general call for members interested in presenting at one of our TASA Thursdays session this year. Current available dates are:

Nominations for the 2022 Stephen Crook Memorial Award are now open. This is a biennial prize for the best authored book in Australian Sociology. | | As mentioned in last week's newsletter, we will be introducing you to the Thematic Group (TG) Conveners for the 2022/2023 term. This week, we are introducing you to the conveners for the Sociology of Education TG. | The aims and objectives of this group are:
- To network researchers interested in the sociology of education and stimulate debate and discussion
- To pursue opportunities for advancing sociological analysis of education and sociology of education in broad terms encompassing issues such as:

|  | Christina Ho is Associate Professor of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney, where she researches migration, cultural diversity and urban inter-cultural relations, with a particular focus on education. Her co-edited books include Asian Migration and Education Cultures in the Anglosphere (2019); 'For those who've come across the seas'- Australian Multicultural Theory, Policy and Practice (2013); and Beyond the Hijab Debates- New Conversations on Gender, Race and Religion (2009).
|  | Sharon Aris has broad experience in both education and community practice having worked as a university lecturer and tutor, vocational and professional trainer, policy advisor and advocate and youth worker.
She also worked for many years as a journalist in print specialising in social issues and in television as a producer and researcher.
Sharon’s research interests relate to the sociology of education, sociology of young people and the family and the sociology of knowledge. | | |
Quentin Maire is a French-Australian Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education and Honorary Fellow at Victoria University’s Centre for International Research on Education Systems in Melbourne, Australia. He is a sociologist researching schooling, education and young people, with a particular focus on social inequalities. He is a comparativist, uses quantitative and qualitative methods, and seeks to historicise contemporary social phenomena. He published his first monograph ‘Credential Market: Mass Schooling, Academic Power and the International Baccalaureate Diploma’ with Springer in 2021.

Sociological Aspects of Knowledge Translation
Special Issue: Issue 1, 2023
This special issue focuses on knowledge translation. Knowledge translation is important, timely, and particularly relevant to the sociology of health, illness, and medicine because:
- The processes through which different knowledges coalesce embody and demonstrate myriad interactions between society and health
- Knowledge translation requires sociologically informed scholarship that accounts for how social interactions and political processes influence health, illness, and medicine
- Indigenous people have emphasised that knowledge translation should be grounded in respect for diverse knowledges and that it should operate relationally, rather than uni-directionally. Further, making knowledge translation foundational to research design and communication provides opportunity to demonstrate respect for Indigenous people’s enduring connections to Country, intergenerational responsibilities and knowledge of communities.

| (In)Justice International are holding a hybrid (online, pre-recorded and in-person) World Convention event on March 22-25 2022. They have received 40 presentations already with more on the way.
